Thomas Marainen was born and raised in Soppero to a reindeer herding family belonging Saarivuoma herding district. He learnt traditional sámi handcraft from his father. He studied wood and antler duodji in Samernas Utbildningscentrum in Johkamohkki
Marainen creates both traditional and contemporary sámi handcraft. His latest works are whistles made of reindeer antlers.
He has worked as a Sámi craftsman in Johkamohkki, Gárasavvon (Sweden), Guovdageaidnu (Norway) and Unjárga (Norway). He has participated in national and international duodji exhibitions in Northern Estonia, Greenland, Germany, Japan and Panama.
As an author he writes poems and children’s books, but also song lyrics with sámi music in the background. He has also translated Ulf Lundell’s and Astrid Lindgren’s songs to sámi.
He has performed both traditional and his own joiks in several concerts and other public exhibitions like Sámi Grand Prix in Guovdageaidnu and Kalevala festival in Petrosoworsk
He is member of Sámi writer’s association, Sámi yoik association, Norrländska writer’s company NPS and BAGO writer’s association.
