Marit-Shirin is a professional dancer and choreographer with indigenous roots from Sápmi and from Kurdistan (Iraq). She is currently based in Umeå where she is working as a choreographer and a dancer with her collaborative project, Humans & Soil.
The project is an international cultural exchange between Sámi, Swedish and Ainu (Japan) artists, and has a premiere in 2021 at Norrlandsoperan with the piece of Itself : in itself.
Humans and Soil aims to collaborate with artistic researchers and artists internationally with the focus on highlighting indigenous bodily rights, and is using dance and music together with academic research to spread information on Sámi and Ainu rights. At the moment the project consists of 9 members: 2 Ph.D researchers from Tromsø and Colorado, and 8 artists including a North-Sámi author and a poet. The project also has 4 co-producers for the upcoming touring performance of itself : in itself
Marit Shirin is also a researcher, currently conducting her MA in International Performing Arts at Stockholm University of Arts, where she intends to continue her collaborations and research on Sámi and Ainu bodily rights.
She has worked as a professional dancer in various dance companies in Belgium, Sweden, Japan, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Spain, Denmark and Finland.
